Datacenter Engineer (As-Needed / On-Call)

Location: Knoxville, TN
Engagement: As-needed / On-call (Part-time, contract)
Compensation: Hourly or per-task (based on experience)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Datacenter Engineer to provide on-demand, hands-on support at a privately operated data center in Knoxville, TN. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who is comfortable working independently, responding to issues as they arise, and performing physical and technical tasks in a live data center environment.

This is not a full-time role. Work is scheduled as needed, based on operational requirements, projects, or incident response.

Key Responsibilities

  • Rack, stack, and cable servers, network equipment, and storage systems

  • Replace failed components (disks, power supplies, NICs, fans, etc.)

  • Perform visual inspections and basic diagnostics

  • Power cycling, console access, and hardware verification

  • Assist with network cabling (Ethernet, fiber) and labeling

  • Coordinate with remote engineers during maintenance or troubleshooting

  • Perform basic facility checks (power, cooling, physical security)

  • Support customer equipment under clear instructions (remote hands)

Required Skills & Experience

  • Hands-on experience working in a data center or server room environment

  • Familiarity with:

    • Server hardware (Dell, Supermicro, HP, or similar)

    • Network switches, firewalls, and patch panels

    • Structured cabling standards

  • Comfortable working around live equipment and production systems

  • Ability to follow detailed technical instructions precisely

  • Reliable, punctual, and professional

Preferred (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with Linux servers

  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms (Proxmox, VMware, etc.)

  • Basic understanding of networking (VLANs, IP addressing)

  • Prior “remote hands” or MSP experience

Work Conditions

  • On-site work only (Knoxville, TN)

  • May involve lifting equipment (up to ~40 lbs)

  • Flexible scheduling based on need (weekday, occasional after-hours)
